Deep learning technology is used to predict patterns and perform judgment-based applications. This advanced technology deploys artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to teach robots and machines to do what comes naturally to humans: learning by example.
From the phones in our pockets to the reality of self-driving cars, the consumer economy has started to tap into the power of deep learning’s neural networks. This same technology is now migrating into advanced manufacturing practices for quality inspection and task automation. Before trusting an AI-based system to make critical decisions such as defect detection however, it must undertake robust testing and validation. Cognex makes this process easy.
Cognex Deep Learning is designed for factory automation. Its field-tested algorithms are optimized specifically for machine vision, with a graphical user interface that simplifies neural network training without compromising performance. Combining artificial intelligence (AI) with In-Sight or VisionPro software, it automates and scales complex part location, assembly verification, defect detection, classification, and character reading inspection applications that, until now, were too challenging for traditional machine vision alone.
Deep Learning solutions from Cognex expand the limits of what a computer and camera can inspect. Applications that previously required vision expertise are now solvable by non-vision experts. Deep learning technology transfers the logical burden from an application developer, who develops and scripts a rules-based algorithm, to an engineer training the system. In this way, deep learning makes machine vision easier to work with, while expanding the limits of accurate inspection.

Blue Locate ToolThe Blue Locate tool is deep learning image analysis software used in manufacturing for finding complex features and objects within a field of view. Blue Locate detects features on noisy backgrounds, in poorly lit environments, on low contrast parts, and even parts that flex or change shape. It locates parts despite variations in perspective, orientation, luminance, glare and color by learning from the samples provided by the user.

Blue Read ToolThe Blue Read tool is used in manufacturing, packaging, and logistics lines to read deformed and poorly-marked characters. Traditional OCR algorithms are fine for clean text on rigid, high contrast backgrounds, but they struggle with skewed ink jet print on deformable packages, or low contrast text stamped in metal. OCR applications that were previously impossible to automate are now possible with the Blue Read tool. Blue Read works right out of the box, without the complex setup of traditional OCR tools, or the need to train from hundreds of samples like many deep learning approaches.

Red Analyze ToolThe Red Analyze tool is used to quickly identify defects on complex parts and surfaces. Using a sample set of good images and bad images with labeled defects, Red Analyze learns the normal part variation, while creating a comprehensive understanding of the defects.

Green Classify ToolThe Green Classify tool is a robust classifier that distinguishes between different types of products or objects, identifies defect types, and even inspects images. Learning from a collection of labeled images, Green Classify identifies and sorts products into classes based on their common characteristics such as color, texture, materials, packaging, and defect type. This image analysis tool tolerates natural deviation within the same class and reliably distinguishes acceptable variation from different classes.
